Cell cultivation is the key enabling technology for the manufacturing of biologics. The major challenges of advanced bio-processing are

  • process intensification
  • reliability
  • fast and easy up-scaling according to GMP standards
  • high yields with appropriate purity and functionality of cell products

Already today, there are severe production capacity shortages in producing biologics. While in the past most of the manufacturing systems were based on conventional fermentation techniques known from brewing or bacteria cultivation, more and more applications and products are available to shift conventional manufacturing methods toward cost-effective and efficient manufacturing methods.

One current stream is based on switching ineffective and costly conventional fermentation methods towards the use of disposables, another stream is to cultivate mammalian cells by means of adherent cell cultivation techniques.
