Today’s major product streams in medical device engineering are combination and multifunctional devices. These products’ functionality is enhanced by immobilized drugs within the device or on the device surface to extend device efficacy and safety. Likewise, the placement, monitoring of such-like devices and therapeutic outcome are improved by embedding additional functionalities to make them detectable in x-ray or NMR imaging. Safety of medical devices can be improved by shielding of metal-based devices to protect them from magnetically induced adverse side-effects. Although these new device concepts are extremely promising and potentially represent landmarks within the medical device industry, an array of industry issues is still unresolved or is currently arising. CINVENTION has addressed all of the known issues and has developed and introduced innovative solutions for the medical device industry.
