Radiopaque coatings are increasingly used for labelling of interventional devices and long-term implants. Some new materials used for implant design are not x-ray visible and it is benefitial to label those device for safe deployment and follow-up diagnosis.

Most new degradable implants are difficult to be labelled for x-ray visibility. Among them are degradable polymer implants, particularly bone grafts in the field of dental applications, or coatings of implantable devices like catheters or interventional devices.

Depending on the device type it is required to have a low-cost technology in place for labelling of large volumes, particularly of disposable devices, or of long-term implants like bone grafts or cardiovascular devices.
